Twice a year, the who’s who of  the fashion industry gather in New York City for a series of runway shows and after parties. If you live in New York, it’s impossible to escape it. The press covers everything, from a run down of “must see” shows to the best street styles. It’s a busy time for photographers who cover the events, running from show to show, capturing the parties and everything in-between.

In 2006, Lee Friedlander was hired by New York Times Magazine Director of Photography Kathy Ryan to photograph backstage at the Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Zac Posen, Oscar de la Renta and Proenza Schouler shows. Many unpublished images from the assignment are now available in a new book, Dressing Up: Fashion Week NYC (Yale University Press, 2015). The 80-page book includes 59 full-page duotone photographs, as well as a conversation between Friedlander and Ryan about the work.
